Core Study #1 - Craftsmanship: For The Beginner

Surface preparation, artists tools and materials.The goals are to prepare and train the student for painting on several traditional and standard surfaces. Proper preparation of surfaces and maintenance of materials and the correct use of standard artist’s tools and the application of finishes are covered. Core Study #2 - Introduction to Value:

Training the new artist to see value. It is invaluable regardless of skill level. Learn to build a correct ten value gray scale, and train the eye to see values. Discover how value plays a major role in the understanding of art. Through the concept of Notan, artists also learn to apply values to create relationships between light and dark. The Mexican sunset painting exercise also helps the student understand the effects of transparent color and the effects it has when placed over light and dark under-paintings. Core Study #3 - Three Dimension and Form:

Discover ways to make objects appear three dimensional. Create the illusion of space and mass with correct value placement relative to light source. learn to place correct values on different forms such as spheres, cubes, cylinders, and cones, and learn how necessary this is to illustrate 3D mass on a two dimensional surface. Core Study #4 - Proofing, Value Sketch and Still Life Study:

Introduction to still life painting and light source. Discover form relative to light source with a monochromatic under painting. Explore both an umber and gray scale under-painting. In this class, the student will learn how to trouble shoot the design elements prior to painting with proofing exercises and by rendering a graphite pencil shading. Core Study #5 - Color Schemes, Low, Mid and High Key Paintings

Learn about color schemes and how they can be used to enhance your compositions. This workshop also teaches you to paint on light, medium and dark backgrounds and how to adjust the color palette to suit the values of each. Core Study #6 - Blending Methods 1 - Differences in blending Techniques , Indirect and Direct methods for rendering form:

Learn the differences between ‘wet on wet’ and ‘wet on dry’ blending methods. Learn to use a combination of Indirect and Direct methods to render the form of an object. Discover how casual blending styles can also be used to portray a more 'painterly' style of art. Core Study #7 - Blending Methods 2 - Direct application ‘wet on wet’ used for Creating Form

Direct painting is commonly known as alla prima or premier coup painting. This is a painting method that applies strokes of paint in one sitting, with the intention of letting it be the final application. There is no over-painting after the first layer of paint dries. This technique was made popular by the impressionistic painters of the nineteenth century. It renders a more 'painterly' style of art. Core Study #8 - Blending Methods 3 - Refined Blending used for Creating Form

Refined Blending is a formal and disciplined method of paint application. Often used in photo realistic styles of painting. Both direct and indirect applications are combined to render form. This style of blending is quite structured. Initial layers are usually created by blending together opaque values using a controlled form of blending referred to as 'refined'. Core Study #9 - Blending Methods 4 - Indirect Application and Blocking-In used for Creating Form

Block & Blend is a combination of both indirect and direct painting methods. A majority of artists combine both applications to create a single painting. This style of blending also renders a painterly style of brushwork. The second study in this course explores the true Indirect Painting Method:Learn the paint application made popular by the Old Masters. Core Study #13 - Understanding the Language of Color

Understanding the Language of Color - In order to be an artist in control of mixing and your color palette, you need to understand the properties of color. In this course we discover the meaning and application of Intensity in painting. Explore the color property of Chroma and how fully saturated or dull color can be used to establish space and depth within the composition as well as open the possibilities for mixing a wide variety of colors.
